Blog: Space-Time Research Software to Take Count in U.S. Census

By Dennis Byron

Two months ago, the day after the 2008 U.S. election, I covered a partially IT-related meeting at the National Press Club in which the Republican and Democratic party chairmen Monday-morning-quarterbacked the just completed election. Governor Howard Dean, the Democrat, said something along the lines of

“… I don’t know what the next big election ‘whatsis’ will be but someone in Silicon Valley probably does and it is probably out on the Internet in some rudimentary fashion already.”

I think I might have just seen the “whatsis” Gov. Dean was guessing about.

Blog: ABS release CDATA Online for the 2006 Census

By Stanley Devia

I received an email today from the Australian Bureau of Statistics announcing that they have released CDATA Online for the 2006 Census of Population and Housing.  If you interrogate Census data as frequently as I do then this is a very welcome announcement.  In fact it’s quite a big deal.  Users can now create their own customised tables, maps and graphs of any data collected from the 2006 Census at all geographic levels.  Tables can be downloaded in Excel or CSV format while maps can be saved as PDF.  Registered users can even save their settings as they work.  All from the comfort of your own browser and for the amazing, low, low price of FREE.

Thank you, ABS.  Pure awesome.  And extra credit for making it multi-platform.  Safari and Firefox users can enjoy the goodness too.

Commentary: Information technology goals for the next President

Over the last few weeks, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain each have begun to outline their proposed information technology (IT) agendas. While policy differences distinguish the presidential candidates, each agenda reflects a basic understanding that increasing information sharing among government agencies and providing greater transparency to the public are key policy and management priorities for the next administration. To accomplish these goals most effectively, the next administration must make implementation of a robust business intelligence strategy a key priority for its IT and management agendas.
