Statistics Help Battle Drug Use and Crime

The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) is chartered to produce evidence‐based and statistical research to aid in the battle against illegal drug use and crime. As interest in the research grew among key users such as the police departments, media, and charities the existing methods used to share the information proved insufficient.

AIC chose to provide the information online in a highly visual, intuitive format. Users now have easier, more flexible access to the data they need to make informed decisions. AIC can communicate their results more efficiently and productively. More knowledge to combat drug use and crime is available and at lower cost.

"Policy makers, police officers and the general public rely on the AIC to provide statistical information on drug and crime data to make more informed decisions. SuperVIEW will enhance our ability to deliver on this charter and provide easy to view, accurate information to a broad range of information consumers.”

Tony Marks, Acting Director, Australian Institute of Criminology

Informed Decisions

Established in 1973, AIC is Australia’s leading national research and knowledge center on crime and justice, The AIC works in partnership with Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA), state police services, and local researchers. The DUMA program monitors local drug use and provides information on drug use patterns, socio-economic and demographic data to examine the relationship between drugs and crime.
The information is used to make decisions about budget allocations, police targets and deployment, social programs and public awareness.

The AIC believed that information made more easily available to a larger audience would result in better informed, more effective decisions.

The institute realized their existing report dissemination process would not fulfil the needs of this group of users and could become too costly. They decided on a self-service data analysis solution to provide users easy-to-understand information that they could interact with to answer their particular questions.

Interactive Visualization

The AIC selected SuperVIEW to achieve an enhanced and intuitive user experience for their diversified consumers’ needs.

SuperVIEW is hosted by AIC’s ‘DUMA Web Publication’ website. It is designed for people who may not be familiar with the organization's data, or data analysis training, yet still want answers to questions. The AIC website provides easy, engaging, and interesting ways of accessing DUMA-specific information, and incorporates guided reports with interactive visualization.

Acting Director of the AIC, Tony Marks, says the SuperVIEW solution “removes the need for ad hoc servicing”. It allows users to build fit-for-purpose reports and reach previously undiscovered information through guided analysis.

The SuperVIEW solution provides police officers in watch houses with up-to-date information in a format that assists in helping them to make more informed policing decisions.

The press has the ability to select and analyse data of interest and public and private organizations can make better informed budget decisions.

More Informed Users

Feedback about the website from traditional information users has also been positive. The AIC has “received positive feedback from channels that were not targeted or expected”, prompting discussion on the development of new services from other AIC data sets.

Increased access and transparency to data has resulted in a more informed police force and general public, paving the way for more informed policy-making decisions and a reduction of the costs of dealing with crime.

"With SuperVIEW, STR has ensured that our data is even more accessible. We have received positive feedback from channels that we had not previously engaged with."

Tony Marks, Acting Director, Australian Institute of Criminology
