SuperVIEW Used in AIC Government 2.0 Publishing Application
The Australian Institute of Criminology has launched an online publication of the Australian Crime: Facts and Figures 2008 database. This first ever interactive publication uses Space-Time Research’s SuperVIEW software in this Government 2.0 version of the crime facts and figures.

Facts and Figures Online presents statistics from 1994 - 2008 on a range of crime statistics to help enhance understanding of the trends and patterns influencing crime and criminal justice in Australia. This is the first time data across different years (time series) has been presented for analysis in this way.

The AIC use SuperVIEW to make their research more accessible and usable through the interactive dissemination of their data. The AIC are showing leadership in the Government 2.0 approach to data transparency - Government 2.0 is a global movement enthusiastically being embraced in Australia and aiming to create a culture of accessible and usable government data. The traditional publication of printed journals and static reports or charts in the past provided a means of accessing some of the research but these publications, while useful, create unnecessary constraints on the audience. This limited the use of publications primarily to the research community. SuperVIEW provides an additional interactive medium for exploring the data.

SuperVIEW uses interactive visualization to make it easy to convey complex statistics to wider communities, such as who is committing crimes and where they are committing them. By using SuperVIEW this way the AIC is encouraging more users to access this valuable data resource more often. The data can be better tailored to meet the needs of its users.
Dr Adam Tomison, Director of the AIC, said, “This innovation will enhance the Institute’s ability to disseminate useful and relevant crime data to the public and other interested stakeholders. SuperVIEW helps us make our research data become an interactive, online resource.”
